I’ve had a love affair with watches since the time I also discovered another one of my great passions – fishing. To be honest, I am a wristwatch fanatic. It started around the time I was about 8 years old, shortly after I was introduced to the wonderful world of angling.

Many, many years later, I am still fascinated with both. So, unlike many of my fishing buddies, I like to wear my watch when I’m out on the water fishing. I don’t know what it is… whether it’s just sheer habit or the unconscious fear of being late for something…  but you won’t catch me without a watch on my wrist.

But there are some inherent problems with wearing a watch around water, particularly in situations where you are more than likely to get more than just your hands wet. But I do it anyway.

The Citizen B9LN0151-09 Promaster: Dive Watch Bargain

Over the years, I have amassed a nice collection of watches, with many providing various degrees of protection against water damage while chasing fish. But I find, like most watchaholics, that no matter how many I have there’s always room for one more.

Recently, I came across what I believe has to be one of the best outdoor watches available today, the Citizen Eco-Drive BN0151-09L Promaster Diver men’s watch.

Now before I go on, I have to tell you that I choose all my watersport/outdoor watches with two things in mind: they have to be attractive, and they have to be functional. Form and function have always been important to me in most of life’s considerations.

So, my watches have to be good-looking as well as serve an intended purpose – in my case, survive the harsh elements associated with saltwater fishing. The Citizen Promaster more than satisfies both of these personal requirements.

But, let’s dig deeper and see what exactly makes this the perfect timepiece for anyone looking for a watch that not only looks great out of the water but is also right at home in it.

Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Promaster Diver Watch With Date, BN0151-09L

The Promaster BN0151-09L Professional Diver for men is a 43mm stainless steel diving watch featuring a gorgeous dark blue dial and dark blue polyurethane strap. It also comes in a black dial/black strap version (BN0150-28E).

Both are powered by the Eco-Drive E168 movement, which is a piece of innovative technology that allows the watch to charge itself using nothing but indoor lighting or sunlight – it will even charge on cloudy days!

Of course, what I’m most interested in is just how water-resistant it is, and the Promaster Diver most definitely delivers in this department, being fully resistant to depths of 200m (660 ft.)

This makes the watch an ideal option for any divers or fans of other water-based activities such as fishing, kayaking, boating, surfing, etc.

This very rugged and beautiful Eco-Drive comes with so much to like in an inexpensive dive watch! So, let’s dive in and take a look at the specs and features that make the Promaster one of the best affordable dive watches on the market.

Key Features of the Promaster Diving Watch

  • Eco-Drive Technology
  • Durable, Quality Construction
  • Functionality
  • Beautiful, Stylish Design

Eco-Drive Technology

Citizen has revolutionized the wristwatch market with its Eco-Drive technology. As the name implies, this all about eco-friendliness by eliminating the need for battery changes by powering the watch entirely by natural, or even artificial light.

Because the Citizen BN0151-09L Promaster Diver is powered by an Eco-Drive E168 movement, the watch will convert any natural light into energy that is stored in a power-cell. In fact, it will run for over 6 months on a single, full charge – even if stored in the dark.

This ensures that the watch can re-charge itself continually as needed, so you will never need to change the battery or worry about the watch suddenly running out of power.

In fact, the Promaster will never need a battery in the first place! So, for a one-time purchase, you can own a watch that will never run out of power (at least not for about 40 years!) providing there is light to convert.

Given the affordable price of the Promaster Diver, this is a great feature and will mean you not only save plenty of money over the long-term but also have a watch that is eco-friendly!

Quality Construction

As you would expect, any effective water-resistant requires quality construction, otherwise, it’s not going to be of much use! The Promaster Diver delivers in this regard, thanks to fine craftsmanship and the use of quality materials.

For starters, it is ISO 6425-certified with a brushed stainless-steel case (less likely to get scratched) and a screw-down crown, making it extremely suitable for water and outdoor action.

It means the watch can handle a fair amount of impact and will offer ample protection from damage due to water intrusion. The same can be said for the slightly recessed anti-reflective mineral crystal used for the dial window, so you needn’t worry about Promaster Diver’s face taking any significant damage.

Additionally, brushed stainless steel is used for the unidirectional rotating bezel, while the Japanese quartz movement design offers accurate yet affordable timekeeping.

The polyurethane strap is a great addition as it is a water-resistant material and is long enough to fit around a wetsuit, making it perfect for anyone who is scuba diving or snorkeling. However, this type of strap is only truly necessary when completely submerged, so not everyone will find it useful.

For example, should you be out in a boat fishing as opposed to being underwater, the rubber strap may feel somewhat unnecessary. Plus, the feeling of the material may be off-putting to some.

In fact, many people may prefer a different material for the strap, such as a stainless-steel option that would complement the case. But the strap can easily be removed and replaced, so it’s not too much of an issue.

Quality of materials and construction is found throughout this wristwatch, and considering how competitively priced it is, the Promaster BN0151-09L more than delivers on value!

Functionality

As with any watch, you expect a certain level of functionality, especially when paying more (although this is certainly in an affordable price range), and thankfully there’s plenty to like here.

Should you be using the Promaster Diver for any sort of underwater activity, the unidirectional function will be useful, with the rotation ideal for measuring time spent diving. It’s a strong-enough bezel too, rotating with a solid push, which is made easier thanks to the scallop grip around the edge.

There are three large hands present on the watch for the hour, minutes and seconds, all of which are luminous for easy visibility. This provides a blueish glow, which is also found on the non-number markers on the dial, so reading it under any lighting condition should be simple.

The hour hand stands out in particular thanks to the vibrant orange border set on the hand.

There’s also a date window, which happens to be placed at the four o’clock potion (as is the crown) rather than the traditional three o’clock. It’s a welcome change that helps to make it stand out that much more.

As previously mentioned, the BN0151-09L is water-resistant to depths of up to 200m, making it suitable for any water-sport or marine activity – it is most definitely a watch that any angler or diving aficionado will appreciate!

Stylish Design

A quick glance at the BN0151-09L Promaster Diver highlights just how stylish a design the wristwatch sports. Blue is the dominating color here, with the dial, strap, and bezel all set in this color.

The bezel is the darkest shade of blue, looking almost black in certain lights, but it can also appear much lighter in different conditions. Regardless of this, the deep blue color offers a truly stylish design that perfectly complements the stainless-steel.

For example, the blue watch dial really stands out thanks to the presence of the hands and minute markers, which are a similar silvery-shade to the stainless-steel case. The orange hour hand really finishes off a beautifully designed watch face.

While the blue strap may not be for everyone, it still provides a modern design that many will love. Again, the contrast of blue and silver/grey is an overall theme for the Promaster, so keeping the blue strap attached really does help to enhance the aesthetics of this timepiece.

Conclusions on the Promaster B9LN0151-09 Men’s Diver Watch

Now, there is certainly no shortage of water-resistant wristwatches on the market, but some are more practical than others, while others can tend to be more style than substance, making it difficult to find a suitable one that blends performance with great looks. You can often struggle to find the right balance between style and functionality.

This isn’t the case with the Citizen BN0151-09L Promaster Men’s Diver wristwatch, however. If there’s one watch that I believe strikes that perfect balance while being offered at a fantastic price, it’s this one. This striking timepiece is as well-made as many costing 3 to 4 times more. In fact, I believe it is the best dive watch value around!

The Promaster Diver offers the best of both worlds without making any compromises, with an incredibly stylish design and lots of functions that make it perfect for anyone who enjoys fishing, water-sports, scuba diving, or simply being outdoors.
