With so much gear available out there, it can be hard to pinpoint a good gift for the fly angler in your life. There are some great technologies out there that can make fishing both easier and fun as well as some simple things that make excellent gifts as well.
I know that I personally enjoy simple presents that make life on the water easier, but it does not have to be something I take fishing with me either. Consider things that will enrich his/her life and hobby for years to come and you cannot buy the wrong gift.
There are so many different ideas that make a good gift and it can be daunting to sift through them all so here we have condensed a shortlist of 10 neat and useful fly fishing gift ideas perfect for any occasion, whether it is Christmas, Father’s Day or any other special day on your calendar.
The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing
You won’t find a better fly fishing gift than this little red book. The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing is a great all-in-one read that is written by two expert anglers and journalists and applies specifically to fly fishing. Time tested techniques and other great information can be found inside the pages of this little book. The convenient size of the book itself is great for packing.
This book is broken down into 5 sections that clearly explain how to fly fish, as well as techniques that are commonly used, as well as gear to have with you every time you head out. This book makes a great gift for any child or young adult who is just starting out fly fishing as well.
I remember when I was a child, I had similar books like this, but they were bulky and did not pack well. I would have liked to have had a small pocketbook on the intricacies of fly fishing and I am sure whoever you buy this for will as well.
Reallink Fly Fishing Tools Kit
The Reallink fly fishing tools kit is a great all-around gift that can really come in handy in the field. No more forgetting things in the car and no more digging through tackle boxes for tools that you need. From sharpening the hook to quickly and securely tying a knot on the go, this is a very handy little set of tools.
I know that sometimes I am waist-high in water and I need to cut my line I forget my clippers on the beach. This is frustrating and I end up having to use my teeth instead. The beauty of tools such as these is that they are made for attachment to your gear.
The attachments are all retractable for easy use and storage and are made of materials that make them suitable for both freshwater and saltwater applications. It is a great present for those who like to do their tool work in the water rather than onshore and can really make someone smile.
FISHINGSIR Fly Fishing Kit
This FISHINGSIR kit is a great kit for the starter angler because of its large selection of flies that are the tried and true staples of any angler. Available in kits from a 64-piece to a 120-piece kit, this kit can match any fishing style or application.
One thing that comes to my mind for the kids is the fact that they can share the larger kit amongst themselves making less gear to pack for you and more fun for them. The case itself is made of a quality material that stands up well to the elements.
It is also weatherproof to keep the flies safe from any outside moisture and can be used in freshwater and saltwater applications safely and effectively. Overall, this is a good case that can be a great starter for someone who is a novice or can be added to a veteran angler’s collection.
Allen Company Cottonwood Fly Fishing Rod and Gear Bag
When it comes to packing your fly fishing gear with efficiency, this case delivers. The Cottonwood Case can hold 4 rods as well as line and other small items that you take with you. I know that a few bags get packed when I go fishing, but only a few make it to the water.
The nice thing about this case is the fact that it can serve as an “everything” bag as well. I pack light when fishing and when I see bags like this, I see the two birds one stone opportunity.
Consider giving this bag to the organized angler in your life or maybe the angler you wish was more organized. The case itself is adjustable as far as spacing which is handy for reels that are larger such as saltwater reels.
Scientific Anglers Deluxe Fly-Tying Kit
I remember the scientific approach my grandfather took to fishing. He believed that your fly needs to be identical to what the fish were biting. Sometimes, even a store-bought fly does not do this which is why this Deluxe Fly-Tying Kit is great for beginners who want to tie their own flies.
This kit is a great “all in one” kit that offers the basic supplies along with quality tools for the angler. Looking at this item outside the application it has for a novice, it is very packable and can be easily used at the truck while in the field.
This kit also comes with a DVD instructional video called “introduction to fly tying” by Greg Vinci to help new anglers learn the art. This gift is perfect for the fly fisherman with an artistic side who loves the observation of nature. Some of my best times in the outdoors were understanding fish and what they were eating.
PLUSINNO Fly Fishing Net
As far as a fishing net is concerned, I am a little picky. Simplicity is what I always look for in most fishing products and a net is no different. The PLUSSINO Fly Fishing net seems neat because of its magnetic release function.
Having the ability to reach for your net and use it with one hand is something I wish I have had in the past. Has anyone ever tried to hold their rod in their armpit while fighting a fish, while trying to net the fish with an obnoxious sized net? I have and it is not fun.
In the past, cloth nets and other materials were harmful to the fish which could even kill the fish in the long run. I absolutely love this net and any other like it because it is gentle on the fish thanks to its soft rubber netting. This also makes it easier to handle a fish in the net.
Rio Headgate Tippet Holder
If one thing is certain in fishing, conditions change. The tippet you are using may suddenly need to change with the new fly you are using. Having your tippet spools handy on your hip is very handy and just makes sense.
The Headgate Tippet Holder is very neat because it has washers built in that prevent the spools from knocking around and contributes to the smooth action of the tippet holder itself. Another feature that I really like is the line cutter that is built-in.
The cutter can be hard to see because of its size but it is very handy when you are on the water. The clip looks like it is very sturdy and simple to operate bit make sure that you have a loop in mind that will work since the clip on this tippet holder seems a little small.
Magreel Two-Sided Waterproof Fly Box
Having the right gear means it needs to be safe and secure. I know that I always appreciate more room for gear of any kind and that is why I really like the Magreel fly boxes. The dual door system allows for more room, but you can also categorize better.
Wet flies on one side and dry on another for example. If it keeps you organized, it is worth looking at. This box comes in three buying options: a small size, large size, or a 3-pack containing small, medium, and large sizes. I know that I like larger boxes for storage, and I like smaller boxes for taking into the water with me.
Weather sealing is important to any storage but especially for your flies. The boxes have sturdy waterproof stripping which is great for those who take their box into the water with them.
The Orvis Fly Fishing Guide
Like The Little Red Book of Fly Fishing, The Orvis Fly Fishing Guide a best-selling guide on the art of fly fishing. Even when I know how to do something very well, I still enjoy reading about it so do not be afraid to get this for the seasoned angler as well.
A little guidance is never a bad thing and this book might be a good idea for any young folks in your life that are looking to get into the sport or who would just enjoy the read. I remember when I was a kid and I had to read a book for hunter’s education called “beyond fair chase”.
I still have that book today and I have made my children read it as well. While that book was about hunting, there is little difference between the two in the sense that they both teach lessons. I encourage you to consider this book and any other fly fishing literature for younger anglers.
Ventures Fly Company Fly Fishing Flies Assortment Box
This is a great gift for anyone who enjoys quality hand made flies. The Ventures Fly Company Assortment Box contains 122 flies that are applicable for all kinds of conditions of fishing. It also has a wide variety that can be collected if the gift is going to a collector.
The neat thing about this case, in my opinion, is the waterproof chart that measures hook size, fly type, and has a cheat sheet for a variety of knots. This kit is great for the beginner angler that needs to learn the different types of flies.
The only feature that I can see being a problem with this kit is the fact that the case is not watertight or water-resistant. If you get this for a loved one, maybe grab them a small fly case that offers a watertight seal.
Something I have Learned
I buy gifts like every year for the holidays for my parents, and one thing that I can tell you is that they always have flies, but they always appreciate more. Typically, with anglers who love their sport, double buying is not a big deal so do not worry about that so much.
I think that every angler wants to fish in as simple of a manner as possible and because of that, they will always appreciate a gift that allows them to simplify a step in their fishing. Things that come to mind on this topic are the Tippet holder and smaller sized fly boxes.
At the end of the day, the best fly fishing gifts are going to be the products that assist anglers in doing what they love. Books are my personal favorites. I was never much of a book reader but put me in front of a book such as the 2 we discussed above, and I will be a happy camper.
Just have fun with it and you’ll find a great gift for your loved one. There are quite a few different brands and products out there and they are all different and applicable to the style in which it will be used, so when buying for someone ask yourself ‘what is their fishing style?’
And, remember, don’t let gift giving consume too much of your time or energy. Have fun with the process and enjoy the occasion!
