Scuba Diving Adventures

Scuba Diving Adventures

Scuba Diving Introduction

Scuba diving is a form of underwater diving in which a diver uses a scuba set to breathe underwater for recreation, commercial or industrial reasons. “SCUBA” is an acronym for self contained underwater breathing apparatus and is now widely considered a word in its own right. Unlike early diving, which relied solely on air pumped from the surface, scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas, usually compressed air. Not being attached to an air line allows scuba divers more freedom than people who snorkel or free dive. Depending on the purpose of the dive, a scuba diver usually moves underwater by swimfins attached to the feet, but external propulsion can come from an underwater vehicle or a sled pulled from the surface. Scuba diving may be performed for a number of reasons, both personal and professional. Most people begin with recreational diving, which is performed solely for enjoyment and has a number of distinct technical disciplines to increase interest underwater, such as cave diving, wreck diving, ice diving and deep diving. Many people will seek scuba diving lessons in order to obtain a scuba diving certification and move on to more professional interests.

Scuba Diving Lessons

Scuba diving lessons are a great way to learn about some of the finer points of scuba diving equipment and the hazards that exist while scuba diving. The most commonly used scuba set today is the “single-hose” open circuit 2-stage diving regulator, coupled to a single pressurized gas cylinder, with the first stage on the cylinder and the second stage at the mouthpiece. In the “single-hose” two-stage design, the first stage regulator reduces the cylinder pressure to an intermediate level. The second stage demand valve regulator, connected via a low pressure hose to the first stage, delivers the breathing gas at the correct ambient pressure to the diver’s mouth and lungs. Due to the complexity of scuba diving equipment, many dangers exist. Pressure injuries, called barotrauma, can be quite painful, in severe cases causing a ruptured eardrum or damage to the sinuses. To avoid them, the diver equalizes the pressure in all air spaces with the surrounding water pressure when changing depth. If properly equalized, the sinus passages can stand the increased pressure of the water with no problems. However, congestion due to cold, flu or allergies may impair the ability to equalize the pressure. This may result in permanent damage to the eardrum. Although there are many dangers involved in scuba diving, divers can decrease the dangers through proper training and education. Therefor scuba diving lessons are imperative and you should always consider open-water certification programs that highlight diving physiology, safe diving practices, and diving hazards.

Scuba Diving Certifications

The kind of Scuba diving certification you will need depends on the kind of scuba diving you will being doing. Recreational scuba diving does not have a centralized certifying or regulatory agency, and is mostly self regulated. There are, however, several large diving organizations that train and certify divers and dive instructors, and many diving related sales and rental outlets require proof of scuba diver certification from one of these organizations prior to selling or renting certain diving products or services. Some of the agencies that can help with your scuba diving certification needs are: British Sub Aqua Club, National Association of Underwater Instructors and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Make sure you are prepared with the right scuba diving certification for your next scuba diving adventure.

Windsurfing Adventures

Windsurfing Adventures

Windsurfing Adventures Introduction

Windsurfing is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. At one time referred to as “surfing’s ginger haired cousin” by the sport’s legendary champion, Robby Naish, windsurfing has long struggled to present a coherent image of the sport to outsiders. Indeed, participants will regularly use different names to describe the sport, including sailboarding and boardsailing. Despite the term “Windsurfing” becoming the accepted name for the sport, participants are still called “sailors” or “board heads” and not “surfers”. Windsurfing is a sport which, once mastered, can be enjoyed, even at an advanced level, well into retirement and then at a more sedate level for considerably longer still. This is partly due to the fact that windsurfing crashes tend to cause less injury than those sports which take place on harder surfaces. Although, being reckless whilst windsurfing in advanced conditions can still cause serious injury or death due to the speeds and altitudes involved. Thus, the equipment you use for your particular windsurfing adventure and the location you choose for it should be chosen carefully.

Windsurfing Equipment

Most modern windsurfing equipment falls into one of several categories. These include freeride, Formula Windsurfing, wave boards, freestyle boards, slalom boards and beginner boards. Freeride boards are meant for comfortable recreational cruising (mostly straight-line sailing and occasional turning) at planing speed (aka blasting), mainly in flat waters or in light to moderate swell. Formula Windsurfing boards are shorter boards up to one meter in width, for use in Formula Windsurfing races. Wave boards are smaller, lighter, more maneuverable boards for use in breaking waves. Freestyle boards are related to wave boards in terms of maneuverability, these are wider, higher volume boards geared specifically at performing acrobatic tricks (jumps, rotations, slides, flips and loops) on flat water. Slalom boards are shortboards aimed at top speed, rather than maneuverability or ease of use. Beginner boards, sometimes called funboards often have a daggerboard and are almost as wide as Formula boards, have plenty of volume and are therefor more stable. There is also a variety of materials used to make windsurfing equipment. The original Windsurfer board had a body made out of polyethylene filled with PVC foam. Later, hollow glass-reinforced epoxy designs were used. Most boards produced today have an expanded polystyrene foam core reinforced with a composite sandwich shell, that can include carbon fiber, kevlar, or fiberglass in a matrix of epoxy and sometimes plywood and thermoplastics. Racing and wave boards are usually very light (5 to 7 kg), and are made out of carbon sandwich. Such boards are very brittle, and veneer is sometimes used to make them more shock-resistant. Boards aimed at the beginners are heavier (8 to 15 kg) and more robust, containing more fiberglass. When choosing the equipment for your next windsurfing adventure make sure to take into consideration the whether conditions at your chosen destination in order to maximize both safety and fun.

Windsurfing Locations

The best windsurfing location for you and your windsurfing adventure will depend on your skill level, but there are several spots around the world known for amazing windsurfing. At the top of the list for windsurfing destinations is Tarifa, Spain. Tarifa is located on the Straights of Gibraltar at the southern tip of Spain. The Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean meet there and Tarifa is commonly called the wind capitol of Europe. Windsurfing is a large part of the culture with windsurf shops dotting the moorish-style street landscape. For vacations in July and August you should seriously consider Rhodes. Being part of the Greek Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes is commonly called Isle of the Sun because it is sunny for 320 days per year. The wind conditions change from flat in the mornings to extremely strong by late afternoon. This provides windsurfers of all levels the opportunity to consistently have some time on the water. Maui is one of the eight islands of Hawaii and is also on the list of top windsurfing destinations. Windsurfers from around the world choose Maui as their best vacation destination. Whether your a serious windsurfer looking for a “sick set” or a novice in search of a great vacation and a place to fit some windsurfing in, there is a windsurfing location perfect for your particular needs.

Ice Fishing Gear

Ice fishing is the practice of catching fish with lines and fish hooks or spears through an opening in the ice on a frozen body of water. Ice fishing can be done in many different ways. Ice anglers may sit on the stool in the open on a frozen lake, or in a heated ice fishing house or cabin on the ice, some with bunks and amenities.

Ice Fishing Houses

Ice fishing houses are great for the ice fishing angler who wants to stay warm. A structure with various local names, but often called an ice shanty, ice shack, fish house, shack, bobhouse, or ice hut, is sometimes used. These are dragged or trailered onto the lake using a vehicle such as a snowmobile, ATV or truck. The two most commonly used types are portable and permanent. The portable houses are often made of a heavy material that is usually water tight. The two most common types of portable houses are when your shelter flips behind the user when not needed, or a pop up shelter so the only means out is through a door. The permanent shelters are made of wood or metal and usually have wheels for easy transport. They can be as basic as a bunk heater and holes or having satellite TV, bathrooms, stoves, full size beds and may appear to be more like a mobile home than a fishing house.

Having the right ice fishing gear is an important part of any ice fishing adventure. Ice fishing gear is highly specialized. First, an ice saw or auger or chisel is required to cut a circular hole or larger rectangular hole in the ice. It is recommended an 8 inch or 20 cm hole is drilled through the ice. Power augers are sometimes used. If these are not available then axes are used to chop a hole in the ice. A skimmer which is a large metal spoon with holes in it, is used to remove new ice as it forms and to clear slush left from making the hole. During colder periods most ice anglers choose to carry a heater of some type. The heater is for warmth and it also keeps an anglers fishing hole from freezing. When temperatures reach -20 °F or colder it becomes very hard to keep a fishing hole open.
